WOD 7/23: hiking

liz and i arrived at the smokey mountains national park in tennessee around 5pm or so. what a drive!!! amazing, to say the least. i could only imagine having a porsche 911 or some type of sport bike for those curves. the fully loaded camry did very well, especially at elevation change. we reached around 3000ft.

the park was beautiful. take the 7 sisters in western mass and multiply it by 100. we hiked to some small waterfalls and beyond a bit. took some pictures. it looked as if some of the mountains were "smoking"...billowing puffs of clouds from their tops...thus the name?

the forest was different from western mass. had a different feel to it. sort of awe-inspiring. these mountains went on forever. this day, for me, marked the start of an eye-opening scenic tour of this continent.

time: 1hr30m

butterflies! too bad the cam isnt great.
i told liz it was me and her ;)

this was a baptist church in memphis.
this about sums up the midwest.
really.

WOD 7/25: hiking

liz and i arrived at the hot springs national park in arkansas around 3pm or so. we could feel the effects of hurricane dolly. it was extremely humid and hot out.
i turned into a human faucet at some point during the walk downtown.

the actual hot springs were neat. a normal looking fountain that shoots out hot water. literally. you could see the steam coming off it and feel the heat within a few feet. there was a row of bathhouses as well...uhm. yea we avoided those. next.

we started the hike at the bottom of the mountain...ie...downtown. because that was what one would do...as a hiker. and so...we did. as we hiked up (both breathing hard enough to notice that this had just become a great workout), a small family passed by us (going down) and the father asked us if we had started from the bottom. after we confirmed, he shook his head and in a moment of dramatic astonishment, wished us good luck up the rest of it.

in other words, it was awesome.

a storm in new mexico. yikes.
somehow we went right around it and completely missed it.
